Dorothy Krause began with four images:
- A portrait of Bob Post in his war correspondent's uniform
- A photograph of a B-24D bomber in flight
- An aerial photograph of Wilhelmshaven, Germany
- A letter from Franklin Delano Roosevelt to Bob Post's widow
She married the images and added color to create the composition used on the cover.
